Homeschool Mom Morning Routine That Actually Works (Even with Toddlers!)

Even if your toddler steals toys and the baby wants to be held all day.

☀️ Let’s Be Real About Mornings, Mama…

If you’re picturing a peaceful homeschool morning with smiling children, warm coffee, and scripture reading in harmony—bless your heart, that is not every day here. 😂

I’m a homeschool mom of three—ages 5, 3, and 5 months—and most mornings are a beautiful blend of blessings, breakdowns, and babywearing while teaching phonics.

But you know what? This routine actually works. It’s not perfect, but it’s peaceful enough, flexible on purpose, and it honors our season and our Savior.

Let me take you inside our home, with all the laughter, tears, and grace in between.

⏰ Our Morning Rhythm (The Real, Raw Version)

Here’s what a good morning looks like in our house:

TimeWhat’s Happening
7:00 AMMax & Ruby goes on while I nurse the baby and start breakfast.
7:30 AMPrayer + breakfast with the kids. We aim to be done by 8.
8:00–8:30 AMThe kids play while I gather materials, check my planner, and mentally prepare.
8:30–8:45 AMMorning Basket—Bible, memory verse, hymn (with lots of wiggling). Worship music helps!
8:45 AMCore subjects: reading, writing, math. When we knock them all out, I feel like Supermom. 🦸‍♀️
9:45 AMMovement break. We run around outside or dance off the wiggles.
10:00 AMTable Time—copywork, coloring, read-aloud if the baby naps.
10:45 AMSnack + chore reset. I switch laundry and breathe.
11:00 AMLoop Block (nature, science, art depending on the day).
11:45 AMFree play / life skills / prep lunch while bouncing the baby.
12:15 PMLunch + quick clean-up. Quiet Time follows… and I might get a blog post written. 😉

💛 Our secret? Grace. Lots and lots of grace.

😫 What About the Hard Mornings?

Let’s talk about the real real.

Some mornings, both my older kids wake up whiny, fighting over toys, and yelling. One wants what the other has—but only because she has it. 🙃
By the time I’ve broken up the fifth argument, I want to melt into the couch with coffee and cry.

So I don’t pretend. I press play on a YouTube sermon about gratitude or God’s presence. It pulls me out of my funk. I have a few favorite ones I go back to—I’ll link them at the end of the post for any mamas who need the same pick-me-up. 🎧

🍼 What About the Baby?

Baby #3 wants to be held all day—and guess what? We make it work.

I nurse during read-alouds, wear him while cleaning, and bounce him while teaching. And this time around, I’ve learned something freeing:

He’s along for the ride.
I don’t change my life for the baby—I invite the baby into our life.

That mindset shift changed everything. 🙌

🙏 How We Invite Jesus In

  • We start with prayer at breakfast.
  • Worship music plays in the background to settle the chaos.
  • Morning Basket includes Bible reading, even if it’s short.
  • Some days, I’m just whispering “Jesus, help me” while holding back tears—and that still counts.

💡 Tips for the Tired Mama

If you’re reading this and feeling like you can’t even imagine having a routine… here’s what I want you to hear:

Don’t blame yourself.

Kids are energetic. Some days they will not sit for five minutes. So take them outside, give them a snack, and try again.
This isn’t public school. You can adjust your schedule. You’re allowed to try new things.

One rule I try to keep?
No TV until after dinner.
It’s not always perfect (especially with Dad home 🙃), but it helps our mornings stay on track.

🧺 Do I Prep the Night Before?

Nope. I’m toast by bedtime. 😴

But I do use that little 30-minute window after breakfast to gather our stuff, flip the laundry, and peek at my planner. It works for me. If you’re a night prepper—bless you, sister. I’m not built that way. 😅

🧡 My Favorite Morning Moments

There’s a moment—after we’ve done reading, writing, and math—when I sit back and feel so proud. 🙌
Or when my son reads to me and I realize: He’s doing it. He’s really learning.

I used to stress so much about him being behind. But now I remind myself:

Most kindergarteners aren’t even reading yet.
He’s exactly where God wants him to be.

And so am I.

✨ Final Encouragement

Mamas, some days you yell. Some days you cry.
And some days you feel like you’re failing.

But God sees you in the mess.

He sees you praying through the tantrum. He sees you bouncing the baby while reviewing sight words. He sees your faithfulness—even when no one else claps but Him.

Your mornings are holy ground. Keep going. You’re doing so much better than you think.
